Reflection 05: What's on Telly?: Exploring British Television

In this country, we don't often get the opportunity to watch a wide range of British television. The American preference for television produced in this country means that British-made programs have a more difficult time reaching mainstream audiences here. In fact, Americans often prefer remakes of British shows to actual British shows. While some British shows have achieved US success (e.g. Downton Abbey), most of UK television is unknown to American viewers. For this reflection, watch, then write about, two of the following UK programs. In your analysis, examine the differences and similarities between the two countries, such as tone, language, subject matter, and comedy.

Choose from two of the following programs. A great number of shows are available on YouTube or at BBC America, but those that aren't can be found from a streaming provider:

AP: Amazon Prime Instant Video
H+: Hulu Plus
NF: Netflix

Broadchurch (ITV) AP
Call the Midwife (BBC) AP, NF
The Catherine Tate Show (BBC) H+, NF
Coupling (BBC) AP, NF
Derek (Channel Four) NF
Doctor Who (BBC) AP, H+, NF
Downton Abbey (BBC) AP, NF
An Idiot Abroad (Sky 1) AP, H+, NF
The Inbetweeners (E4) AP, H+, NF
The IT Crowd (Channel 4) AP, NF
Little Britain (BBC) H+, NF
Long Way Down (BBC) H+, NF
Long Way Round (Sky 1) H+, NF
Luther (BBC) AP, NF
Miranda (BBC) H+
The Office [UK] (BBC) AP, NF
The Only Way is Essex (ITV) H+
Shameless [UK] (Channel Four) H+, NF
Sherlock (BBC) AP, NF
Torchwood (BBC) AP, NF, H+
The Wrong Mans (BBC/Hulu) H+

Note: UK broadcasting standards are different than those in the US, so you may find more profanity, violence, even nudity, in British shows.

Infographic: The Evolution of Gayness on TV

Though gay characters on TV are commonplace today, it has taken over 40 years reach this point. In fact, for decades gayness was invisible on television. But, over time, as American attitudes evolved, television's landscapes became friendlier to homosexuals. As homosexuals on TV developed from broadly-drawn caricatures to fully-realized three-dimensional characters, America, too broadened its view of gays. For this assignment, you will create an infographic highlighting the evolution of LGBT characters on TV. Additionally, in order to provide historical context for these characters, your timeline should be punctuated with real-life events in the gay rights movement (e.g. the Stonewall riots, the assassination of Harvey Milk, Prop 8).

To create your infographic, you may utilize either of these two programs:

Additionally, you may use Photoshop, Illustrator, or PowerPoint.

Requirements:
  • Ten sources minimum
  • Include a works cited page

A well-executed infographic will:
  • Have a title that articulates the purpose of the assignment
  • Contain a concise thesis as the subheading—important
  • Highlight only those characters that best illustrate TV's evolving view of of gays
  • Be designed in a way that enhances the subject matter
  • Visually translate historical events and milestones in a clear and enlightening manner

Expository Essay: How MTV Changed Everything

Watching MTV today, it may be difficult to appreciate how, upon its debut, it revolutionized the face of American television. But, why was the concept of a 24-hour music video channel so radical? What do the first-hand accounts of MTV’s conception and early years tell us about how this iconic network became the defining cultural force of the 80s and 90s? Citing from Tannenbaum and Marks’ I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution, explain the impact this radical channel had on America’s television landscape.
